Family Outing

Today we drove to Loon Lake which is near the town of Scottsburg and about 20 miles inland from the coast. History lesson time-It's a mountain lake that was formed 3,000 years ago when the east facing part of the coastal range gave way too massive landslides, 20 ton boulders traveling 1 mile down, dammed a creek. The lake was eventually filled by the heavy fall and winter rains. Loon Lake got its name in the 1850's when men traveling in the area with commercial lumber trade discovered it and named the lake after the common Loon Duck which nests in the area. Loon lake is approx 1/2 mile wide and 3 miles long with depths of 240 feet. We had a great time relaxing and catching a few fish, afterwords we headed to the lodge which overlooks the lake and ate lunch. The area is complete with camp sites, lodging, a store with beer!, boat rentals (paddle boats, jet skis, a jet boat, pontoon boat) and cabins. (15ft fishing boat with an outboard motor sounds like fun) Just an awesome mountain resort! It's a great area, great people and beautiful scenery. What a way to recharge your batteries! Sure we'll be back again! Look forward to taking family and friends there sometime. Hope everyone had a good weekend, take care. The Yates'
